There was once a time when the greatest names in sports were cyclists, making a handsome living racing on tightly banked oval indoor tracks. Madison Square Garden and other venues around the country annually hosted events that pulled in crowds for six days and nights to watch the greatest show in town: the Six- Day Races.

First imported into the United States from England a decade earlier, Six-Day races had gained much in popularity. It was a simple formula: keep the contestants riding from early Monday morning to late Saturday night, to see who could cover the greatest distance. Although the first races required single riders to compete, two-man teams were soon introduced in response to objections about the unacceptable stresses on the riders.

The 1920's, also known as the Jazz Age, were the heyday for Six-Day racing in America, and the tracks were amongst the best places to be entertained by some of the greatest names in jazz. Many of the rich and famous—from opera singers to film stars—loved to be seen at the races.

This highly pictorial book gives the first thorough account of this once robust sport. Using photographs from his own and Jeff Groman's collections, author Peter Nye provides the story that ties it all together.
